Cool Facts About Tulips - It All Started in the Year 1560...

Cool facts about the Tulip
Cool facts about the Tulip

The Netherlands is famous for its Tulips. The beautiful flower is exported worlwide. They are an important part of the Dutch culture.

Did you know that the Tulips origin isn't Dutch at all?

The Tulip was founded in the mountains of Kazakhstan! Turkish tradesmen brought the Tulip to Western Europe in 1560, the Tulip arrived in Holland around 1570. And after 23 years the first Tulips were cultivated in the so called Hortus Botanicus in Leiden (a Dutch town between Rotterdam and The Hague) by Carolus Clusius, a grower, who discovered the Tulip at the imperial gardens of Vienna he took care of for many years. He was so charmed by the beauty of the rare flower that he made a collection of Tulip bulbs and took them to Holland.

Carolus Clusius didn't want to spread his collection of Tulips throughout the entire country, he only wanted to share the wonder with fellow growers and scientists. Sadly for Clusius thieves broke into the Hortus Botanicus and after that the Tulip spread itself through Holland.

The Tulip was expensive those days, there was a true 'Tulip mania' going on. The price of 1500 Euro per Tulip or even higher was prety normal. For example: you could buy a house for that in Amsterdam! And it was the 20-fold of the annual salary of a specialist craftsman, can you imagine! The Tulip became the symbol of wealth. In the year 1637 Dutch government made an end to the mania by prohibiting the crazy transactions.

About 75% of the Tulips that are grown in the Netherlands are for export, the rest is sold to Dutch consumers. Tulips from Holland have a huge variety of colors and shapes.
